Gallows Humor?

The latest round of UNFCCC negotiations are underway in Accra this week, and Reuters environment correspondent Alister Doyle is reporting optimism on the part of the ofttimes frustrated UN climate chief, Yvo de Boer:

It’s moving pretty well now. We’re getting beyond some of the rhetoric. People are beginning to understand each other better.

Meanwhile, back in New York, activist plans to invite Russian invasion as a means to mitigate climate change have been discouraged by the recent remarks of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice on a related issue:

Since the United States is a permanent member of the Security Council, this simply will be dead on arrival in the Security Council.

Neither the official position of the world’s second-largest GHG emitter, nor its phrasing, is reported to have hindered ongoing consultations on the PSIDS draft resolution, “The threat of climate change to international peace and security”.
